Lyon's most beautiful districts to visit

Head to downtown Lyon for a stroll through three emblematic neighborhoods!

Discover Lyon's most beautiful districts

Old Lyon

In this historic district, stroll through cobblestone streets, Renaissance buildings with terracotta roofs and a host of authentic restaurants.

Places to visit in Vieux-Lyon :
  • Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral: medieval edifice famous for its astronomical clock
  • The Musée Miniature et Cinéma: discover one of the world's largest collections of objects and costumes seen in the most famous films and TV series (Breaking Bad, Jurrassic Park, James Bond...).
  • La longue traboule: the longest traboule (passageway) in Vieux-Lyon, it passes through four inner courtyards and crosses four buildings. Traboules were widely used in the Middle Ages.

La Croix-Rousse

A veritable village within the city, the Croix-Rousse district is a favorite with locals and visitors alike. In the past, it was home to a large number of silk weavers. This popular atmosphere can still be found today in the market, held from Tuesday to Sunday.

Places to visit in the Croix-Rousse district:
  • La Maison des Canuts: a silk museum retracing the history of Lyon's silk industry.
  • La Fresque des Canuts: a 1,200m2 trompe-l'oeil depicting life in the Croix-Rousse district.
  • Parc de la Cerisaie: 4.5 hectares of greenery where you can admire works of contemporary art.

The Presqu'Île

Located in the center of Lyon in the first and second arrondissements, the Presqu'île district is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Much of the entertainment at the famous Fête des Lumières takes place here.

Places to visit in the Presqu'Île district :
  • Basilique - Abbaye Saint Martin d'Ainay: Lyon's only Romanesque church (11th century)
  • Place Bellecour: France's third-largest square
  • Musée des Beaux-Arts: collections from Antiquity to the present day in an exceptional setting - a former 17th-century abbey. It is the second most important museum in France after the Louvre in Paris.
